What Actually Changes When a Eurovision Song Becomes Its Contest Version?

Three minutes, six people on stage, live lead vocals, every instrument printed to a backing track. The four constraints and what follows from them.

A Eurovision contest version is a rearrangement built around four fixed constraints: three minutes maximum, six people on stage, lead vocals sung live, and every instrument printed to a backing track. None of that is a creative choice, and all of it decides the arrangement. In practice the intro shrinks, the hook moves earlier, the instrumental gets printed with headroom deliberately left in it, and any part that depended on a seventh player gets rewritten into the track. The song comes out shorter and denser, and what survives is whatever reads on a stage 40 metres wide.

What are the rules a contest version has to satisfy?

Four of them do almost all the work, and they are published in the contest rules rather than negotiated.

Length is capped at three minutes. Six performers on stage, no more. The lead vocal has to be sung live. No live instrumentation at all, which means everything except that live vocal exists as a file.

Since 2021 the rules have also allowed pre-recorded backing vocals, which quietly changed how these arrangements get built. Harmony stacks that used to cost a body on stage now cost nothing except the decision to print them.

Read those four together and most of the arrangement is already decided before anyone opens a session.

Where do the missing 45 seconds usually come from?

A typical album cut runs 3:30 to 3:50. That leaves 30 to 50 seconds to find.

They rarely come from one place. The intro goes first and goes hardest: a release can spend 16 to 20 seconds establishing an atmosphere, and on a contest stage those seconds are the camera finding the singer, so the intro usually lands at four or eight bars. At 120 bpm, eight bars is 16 seconds, which is most of the problem solved in one cut.

After that, the cheapest material is repetition. A final chorus repeat carries no new information, so it goes. An instrumental break between verse two and the bridge goes next.

The expensive cut is the bridge, because it is the only section in the song that has not been heard before, and it is usually where the staging has its one visual change. Cutting eight bars of bridge to save four seconds tends to cost more than it saves.

One practical detail: the timer starts at the first sound. Any pre-roll, any ambience, any breath before the downbeat counts against you.

What happens to the printed instrumental?

This is the part that gets underestimated, and it is the part that decides how the song sounds on the night.

Once instruments are committed to a file, that file has to survive two chains at once. A stadium PA wants transients intact, because the impact of a snare in an arena is transient information. The broadcast path wants the opposite, because it applies its own processing before it reaches anyone at home. European broadcast delivery works to EBU R128, which normalises programme loudness to -23 LUFS, and the loudness measurement underneath it is the ITU-R BS.1770 algorithm.

The consequence is simple. If you deliver the instrumental already flattened, the broadcast chain flattens it again and the arrangement loses depth on the largest audience it will ever have. Leaving 3 to 4 dB of headroom on the printed instrumental lets you decide which transients get lost rather than finding out during the live show.

Delivery specifics that avoid arguments later: 48 kHz, 24 bit, one file with a count-in, and a matching version with the lead vocal removed so the singer's monitor mix can be built from the same master.

What changes in the vocal arrangement?

A live lead is a different instrument from a comped lead.

In a studio, a lead vocal is usually assembled from several passes, with the best line reading from one take and the best last word from another. On stage the singer produces one pass, on the hardest night of the year, after two weeks of rehearsals and one dress run under full lighting. Anything the studio comp was hiding is now audible.

That is why the harmony work tends to migrate into the printed track and why the lead line often gets simplified. It is also why keys move. Dropping a semitone costs almost nothing in the arrangement and buys a repeatable performance across a semi final, a jury final and a grand final in the same week.

What happens to traditional instrumentation?

Folk instruments are the part of this process that most needs care, because the thing that makes them good in a studio is the thing that breaks them on a click.

A sopilka or a telenka recorded loose against a live band sits slightly ahead or behind the grid, and that is where its character comes from. Printed to a backing track with no player on stage to follow, that looseness reads as an error, because there is nothing left for it to breathe against.

The usual answer is to tighten the entries and leave the tails alone. Quantise where the note starts, never how it ends, and keep the vibrato and the breath. A hard quantise on the whole phrase turns a wooden flute into a sample library.

What does a revamp deliberately not change?

The identity hook stays, and everything else is negotiable.

Every entry has one element that a viewer can reproduce badly the next morning: a phrase, a rhythm, an instrumental figure. That element gets protected, moved earlier and given more room, because 26 songs in a final is a memory problem before it is a music problem.

Ziferblat's "Bird of Pray" is a useful example of how visible that process is: Suspilne published the contest version as a separate event in March 2025, before the contest, which is now standard practice. The revamp is treated as a release in itself, and it is judged as one.
