What Should You Check Before Your Music Plays in an Inglewood Venue?

Four rooms sit within a mile of each other in Inglewood, from 6,000 seats to 70,240. Two numbers decide whether a Burbank mix survives them.

Two things, and neither of them is the mix. The reference level the room is aligned to, and what the room does below 80 Hz. Inglewood now holds four event rooms inside roughly one square mile, ranging from a 6,000-seat theatre to a 70,240-seat stadium, and a mix signed off on nearfields in a Burbank control room meets a decay time an order of magnitude longer than the one it was made in. The drive is about 25 miles south. What follows is what to measure when you arrive, and the geography mistake that costs touring people a hotel booking.

Why does the name Hollywood Park mislead people?

Because Hollywood Park is in Inglewood, and Inglewood is its own city. It incorporated on 8 February 1908 with a population of 1,200, and it has never been part of the City of Los Angeles. The name comes from the Hollywood Park Racetrack, which opened on 10 June 1938 after Jack Warner formed the Hollywood Turf Club, and which sat about three miles from what is now LAX. The development on that site kept the racetrack's name.

Hollywood, the neighbourhood, is roughly 20 miles north inside the City of Los Angeles. The two are not adjacent and not in the same jurisdiction. The practical cost of confusing them is a hotel booked near Hollywood Boulevard for a load-in on Prairie Avenue, which adds an hour each way on a show day and puts the crew on the 110 in the wrong direction. Check the city on the contract, not the venue name.

What are the four rooms, and why does the spread matter?

SoFi Stadium seats 70,240 and sits on the old racetrack land. YouTube Theater opened in 2021 in the same development at about 6,000 seats. The Kia Forum has been an arena on Manchester Boulevard for decades. Intuit Dome opened on 15 August 2024. Four rooms, one district, a capacity spread of more than eleven to one.

That spread is the reason a single approved master is not a plan. A 6,000-seat theatre is close enough to a large cinema that the mix translates with small corrections. A stadium bowl is a different acoustic problem: long reverberation at low frequencies, distributed delay towers, and an audience absorbing the top end unevenly depending on how full it is. The same file has to work in a room where the reflection arrives 40 ms later than the direct sound, and in one where it arrives after a second or more.

What reference level is the room set to?

Ask, because there are two different answers and neither is universal. A screening room, a dubbing stage or a cinema is aligned to SMPTE ST 202, which sets each screen channel so that pink noise at -20 dBFS reproduces at 85 dB SPL, C-weighted, slow integration, at the listening position, with channels matching within 1 dB. SMPTE ST 2095-1 defines the calibration noise itself, which is why two rooms aligned to the standard measure the same.

Live rooms have no equivalent. A touring PA is aligned for coverage and arrival time, and the level in the room is whatever the system tech and the local ordinance allow that night. So the number you carry in is your own. Bring one reference track whose level you know, an SPL meter set to C-weighting and slow, and take a reading at the mix position before anything of yours plays. Without that reading you are guessing at how loud your material is relative to everything else on the bill.

What happens to the low end when the room gets eleven times bigger?

It stops being a level problem and becomes a time problem. A treated control room decays in roughly 0.3 seconds. A stadium bowl runs several seconds at low frequencies, and the energy that decays slowest is the energy under 100 Hz. A kick and a sustained sub that read as separate on a nearfield arrive on top of each other, because the tail of one is still in the room when the next hits.

Two decisions fix most of it before you leave Burbank. Choose one instrument to own the region under 60 Hz and high-pass everything else out of it, so there is nothing left to smear. Then check the overlap between 60 and 100 Hz with a narrow cut on the kick or the bass and decide which one loses. A mix that sounds slightly thin on nearfields is usually the one that survives the bowl, which is the reverse of what a small room teaches you.

What do you take with you, and when do you leave?

A calibrated reference track, an SPL meter, and a second copy of the files on a separate drive that does not need a laptop to read. Check the district calendar before you agree to a time: with four venues inside a mile, two events on the same night fills the local streets and the parking structures, and the difference between arriving at 14:00 and 17:00 is not the 25 miles from Burbank, it is what the 405 and Century Boulevard are doing.

The one piece of preparation that pays for itself is measuring your own material at the mix position and writing the number down. A room aligned to 85 dB C at reference and a room running 15 dB hotter will make the same master sound like two different records, and knowing which one you are standing in takes about 30 seconds. Frequently asked

Is Hollywood Park in Hollywood? No. Hollywood Park is in Inglewood, a separate city in Los Angeles County that incorporated on 8 February 1908. It takes its name from the Hollywood Park Racetrack, which opened there in 1938. Hollywood is a neighbourhood of the City of Los Angeles about 20 miles north.

How far is Inglewood from Burbank? About 25 miles south, crossing the City of Los Angeles between the two. Both Burbank and Inglewood are independent cities, so a permit or an ordinance that applies in one has no bearing in the other, including noise limits and load-in hours.

What SPL should a screening room be calibrated to? SMPTE ST 202 sets each screen channel so that pink noise at -20 dBFS produces 85 dB SPL, C-weighted, slow integration, at the listening position, with channels matching within 1 dB. Live venues are not aligned to any equivalent standard, so measure the room yourself.

If your music is playing in that district soon

Get the venue's city and street address in writing, ask whether the room has a documented alignment, and carry a reference track with a known level plus an SPL meter set to C-weighted slow. Take the reading before your material plays, and decide the sub-60 Hz question in the control room rather than in the bowl. Background and contact at /about.
