Aircraft noise in Inglewood arrives from above, which means it comes through the roof, and the roof is the lightest part of any residential building. Wall treatment does nothing about it. The practical answer is a tighter microphone pattern, shorter takes, and a schedule built around the traffic pattern rather than against it, because the quiet window most people plan around, the small hours, is precisely the window that Los Angeles World Airports tried to protect and the FAA declined to grant. What follows is what actually changes the recording and what only changes how the room looks.
Where exactly is Inglewood, and why does that matter here?
Inglewood is its own incorporated city in Los Angeles County, not a district of Los Angeles, and it sits directly east of LAX.
That distinction is not pedantry. It decides which municipal code applies to a noise complaint, which building department issued the permit on the house you are recording in, and which city you call. It also catches people out in the other direction: the Hollywood Park complex, with SoFi Stadium and YouTube Theater in it, is in Inglewood. Hollywood is a neighbourhood of the city of Los Angeles about fifteen miles northeast, and the two have nothing to do with each other beyond a racetrack that borrowed the name in the 1930s.
The geography that matters acoustically is simpler. LAX occupies the ground immediately west and southwest, its runways run east to west, and the residential grid of Inglewood begins a short distance off the eastern end of them.
Why do the runways point the way they do, and what does that do to your session?
Prevailing wind. Aircraft need to take off into it, and at LAX it comes off the ocean.
Los Angeles World Airports state the operating reality plainly in their east departures reporting: aircraft typically depart to the west because of prevailing westerly wind conditions. Departures head out over the water. Arrivals come in from the east, which puts them over Inglewood on approach, low and configured, with flaps and gear out and engines at a steady setting.
The approach noise is the one that shapes a recording day. It is regular, it is broad in frequency, and each overflight occupies twenty to forty seconds of rising and falling level rather than a brief event you can edit around.
Is the middle of the night the quiet window?
This is the assumption worth dropping first, and there is a documented reason for it.
The same LAWA page describes a specific category of operation: aircraft that depart to the east between midnight and 6:30 a.m. while the airport is otherwise still conducting westerly departures. It happens when the land cools faster than the ocean and a slight offshore tailwind develops, and the pilot decides the tailwind is too great for the weight of the aircraft to take off safely to the west. The request is granted, and a departing jet at climb power passes over the houses east of the airport instead of over water. Los Angeles World Airports completed a Federal Aviation Regulations Part 161 study in early 2013 seeking authority to restrict exactly these departures during exactly those hours. On 7 November 2014 the FAA disapproved it, on the basis that it did not meet all six statutory conditions. The restriction does not exist. What exists instead is a voluntary programme of letters asking airlines to fill in a form afterwards.
So the planning consequence is concrete. In Inglewood, a 2 a.m. tracking session is a gamble with an unusually loud downside, because a departing aircraft at climb thrust is far louder than an arriving one on approach.
Why does wall treatment fail on this problem?
Because the source is above you and the roof is the weakest element in the envelope.
Two different quantities get confused constantly. Absorption changes what happens to sound already inside a room, and it is what foam, panels and bass traps do. Transmission loss is how much a construction reduces sound passing through it, and it is a function of mass, air gaps and structural decoupling. Aircraft noise is entirely the second problem.
A stucco wall on a wood frame has some mass. A residential roof over an unconditioned attic has almost none: composition shingle, sheathing, rafters, then a plasterboard ceiling with recessed light fittings cut through it. That assembly faces the source directly, and every downlight in the ceiling is a hole in the only membrane you have.
The cheap interventions that measurably help all target that path. Blocking off the recessed fittings from inside the attic with sealed backing boxes. Laying additional loose insulation over the ceiling area under the recording position, which adds a little mass and a lot of flow resistance. Recording in an interior room with a room above it rather than a room with sky above it. None of this is glamorous and all of it beats a wall of foam.
What changes at the microphone?
Pattern, distance and take length.
A cardioid large diaphragm condenser aimed upward at a singer's mouth is also aimed at the ceiling. Turning the microphone so the null of the pattern points at the ceiling costs nothing and removes real energy. A hypercardioid has a tighter forward lobe with rear lobes to manage, and a decent moving-coil dynamic close in trades a little top end for a large reduction in everything arriving from the room.
Distance matters more than usual. Every halving of the distance to the source raises the direct signal about 6 dB while the aircraft noise stays where it is, so moving a singer from 25 cm to 15 cm buys roughly 4 dB of signal to noise for free. That has to be balanced against proximity effect, which is why the working distance ends up around 15 to 20 cm rather than closer.
Take length is the scheduling variable nobody sets deliberately. If an overflight passes every three to four minutes, recording in 45-second chunks means one aircraft ruins one chunk. Recording four-minute full passes means one aircraft ruins the pass.
Can the noise be removed afterwards?
Partly, and less than people expect, because it is not stationary.
Broadband noise reduction works by learning a profile of a constant noise floor and subtracting it. Aircraft noise rises and falls over twenty to forty seconds and changes spectral content as the aircraft passes and the Doppler shift moves, so a single learned profile is wrong for most of the event. Push the reduction hard enough to remove it and you get the watery artefacts that give the process away, on the vocal as much as on the noise.
The measurement point worth knowing: A-weighting substantially discounts energy below 200 Hz, which is where a large part of aircraft rumble lives, so an A-weighted reading badly understates this particular problem. Log your noise floor with C or Z weighting if the meter offers it, and log it hourly across a full day before committing to a room.
What is Inglewood actually good for?
Live capture, and there is a lot of it within a mile.
YouTube Theater opened on 9 August 2021 under the same roof structure as SoFi Stadium, seats between 3,400 and 6,000 depending on configuration across 227,000 square feet, places its furthest seat 164 feet from the stage and runs an L-Acoustics system. The Kia Forum has been operating since December 1967 and holds around 17,500. Intuit Dome opened in August 2024 a short distance away.
For a multitrack capture in any of those rooms the aircraft problem inverts and disappears, because the building is large and heavy and the ambient level inside is 90 dB before anyone worries about a jet. What replaces it is the ordinary discipline of live recording: a proper split off the front of house console, isolated transformer splits rather than passive Y cables, a locked sample rate agreed with the broadcast truck if there is one, and audience microphones placed where they capture the room rather than the nearest twelve people.
What does the drive north cost you?
About twenty miles and a decision about when to leave.
Inglewood to Burbank is the 405 north to the 134 east, roughly twenty miles. Outside peak that is about 35 minutes. At 5 p.m. it can be 80 minutes or more, and the 405 between the 10 and the 101 is one of the least predictable stretches in the county. If a session is booked in Burbank and the singer is coming from Inglewood, the practical answer is a start time before 3 p.m. or after 7, and treating the drive as part of the session rather than as something that happens before it.
